farmOS: agricultural record keeping software (as a service)

farmOS

farmOS + Docker

Newsletter Issue 18 -  October 20th, 2016

Greetings farmOS followers!

farmOS is now available as a Docker image!

"Docker is an open-source project that automates the deployment of applications inside software containers." - Wikipedia

Docker makes it easy to package up farmOS, along with all of the infrastructure it runs on (Apache, PHP, MySQL, etc) in simple "containers" that can be run on Windows, Mac, and Linux.  So you can host your own farmOS instance locally rather than on the internet.

This is extremelly useful for development, because it means developers can get a farmOS instance up and running quickly, and they can immediately start tinkering with it. As the community grows and more developers start to become involved in the project, I hope that this will lower the barrier to entry for contributing to farmOS.

I wrote up some documentation for using the farmOS Docker image on farmOS.org: http://farmos.org/development/docker/

The official image build is available on Docker Hub: https://hub.docker.com/r/farmos/farmos/

Thanks to @rjsteinert, @thedude459, and @kadaan on GitHub for helping to make this happen! Here is the issue where much of the discussion took place: https://github.com/farmOS/farmOS/issues/15

If you try out the farmOS Docker image, let us know what you think!

All the best,
-Mike Stenta
