farmOS Beta 11 Released

Newsletter Issue 13 - April 17th, 2016

Hello farmOS followers!  farmOS version 1.0-beta11 has just been released. The full release notes are available here: http://farmos.org/news/2016/04/13/farmos-beta-11-released

I recorded a YouTube video outlining some of the new features in this release: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tnon7gHR-cY

Area Calculation

Now you can see the calculated area of fields in acres/hectares (for larger areas) or square feet/meters (for smaller areas).  A new Farm Quantity module is included for setting your farm's default system of measurement to either Metric or US/Imperial.

Area Generator

Another new module included with farmOS now is the Area Generator - which is a new tool for generating sub-areas within a parent area in bulk.  The main use-case for this is to generate a bunch of parralel beds within a larger field.  This is useful for vegetable growers who organize their operations into beds.  Previously, drawing each bed in the map would be extremely time consuming (and imperfect).  Now, just select the parent area, enter how many beds you want, and what orientation they should run in, and bam!  Beds will be automatically generated to fill the field.

It was fun to build all the math functions necessary for this feature - but it's still just a first step.  I envision this area generator becoming a pluggable interface, with different ways of generating areas.  The first way is just simply for generating long rectangles.  If you have ideas for new plugins, let me know!

The area generator tool has a "Preview" button so you can see what the areas will look like before you generate them.  Make sure you use this, because deleting the areas afterwards must be done one at a time.  I created a new feature request that will allow areas to be deleted in bulk as well (https://www.drupal.org/node/2705549), but for now just make sure you preview first.  ;-)

Monthly Calls

We host a monthly farmOS call via Google Hangouts for anyone interested in learning more or getting involved.  The next call will be May 11th, 2016 at 1pm EST / 5pm UTC.

You can find the 2016 schedule, and a link to the call at http://farmos.org/monthly-call

farmOS is developed collaboratively. If you have ideas, requests, bug reports, or questions, open a new issue in the queue on drupal.org: http://www.drupal.org/project/issues/farm

Until next time...
