Drupal 8!

November 19, 2015 - 5:34pm

Today is a day to celebrate!  The eighth major version of Drupal has just been released!  https://www.drupal.org/8

Drupal 8 is the culmination of work from over 3000 contributors - and represents a major step for the open source Drupal project.

farmOS is built on Drupal 7, but we are excited to start upgrading to Drupal 8.  We already have a roadmap in place.  The biggest part will be helping to upgrade all of the contributed modules that farmOS is built upon.  Luckily, a LOT of the modules that farmOS uses are included in Drupal 8 core!  That means they're already done and ready to go.  Most of the other modules that farmOS depends on already have a Drupal 8 version underway.  Links to all the relevant initiatives are provided in our roadmap.

Once that's done, we can convert all of our farmOS-specific modules (and theme) to Druapal 8 as well.  This part will be relatively painless, because we have followed the Drupal coding standards so closely - it helps to work with the community!  We use Features a lot, which will convert nicely to the new Configuration Management system.  And most of the other stuff is Entity API code that is actually EASIER to write in D8 than in D7.  So we're looking good!  And we're excited to get it done!

Cheers to everyone who made D8!

First Monthly Call - Sep 2nd, 2015

September 3, 2015 - 2:11pm

We hosted our first monthly farmOS call last night via Google On Air Hangouts. The call was recorded, and is available on YouTube (embedded below). Here is the event in Google+: https://plus.google.com/events/c2b55pcct7c2o636feurmpmmvi4

It was my first On Air call, and I didn't know the correct way to share the link so that other people could participate, so it's just me talking.  I have since learned how to do it correctly, so next month you can join in the conversation!

The plan is to host a call each month, after a new version of farmOS is released, so we can talk about what was accomplished in the last release, and what we're going to work on for the next one!

The next scheduled call will be on October 7th, 2015 at 7:00pm Eastern US time.  Here is the link: https://plus.google.com/events/cp4eqh708ug4r8261qhb60tq1hc
